Or You Could be Decapitated by an Elevator...

We had our Hebrew names before visiting Israel, but now we have our personalities too.

My mom in Israel: (clicks camera)

My dad in Israel: "This is how Israel differs from Vermont..."

Me in Israel: "Let's compare the ways there are to die in Israel to the ways there are to die in the United States..."

Here are my kids in Israel:
Jeff/tour guide - "...and as you can see from the edge around this stone, it is from the time of Herod..."
Kids - "LOOK! A CAT!! LOOK!!!"

Jeff - "...from here we can see..."
Kids - "LOOK! A CAT!!! Look at it!!!!!!"

Jeff - "In Caesarea the aqueduct..."
Kids - "LOOK!!!!! A CAT! Oh look!!!!!!!! TWO CATS!!!!!!"

Did I mention Israel has TON of cats? Dad says next time he wants to take my kids on a luxurious vacation, he's just going to rent an apartment in Hoboken, fill it with cats, and leave them there for a week.

My infatuation with the relative dangers of Israel versus the US might be what led me to find the various danger signs so intriguing. This one was to warn of land mines. Obviously we weren't walking around near potential mines, so that's why the picture is so blurry. I took it from a moving car:I loved this one posted on an electric pole. It reads, "Danger of death!" Nothing like telling it like it is!I wonder if the death comes from falling from the tower or electric shock?

This last one at Gamla warns of the danger of falling off a cliff. Cassie loved that the little guy's (or gal's) head has seemingly already been removed from his or her body. I liked that it operates on the assumption that one is enjoying a day at the park, unaware of walking along the edge of a humongous cliff. But then again, they say you can never be too careful: In Houston you just have to settle for being decapitated by a malfunctioning elevator. For real.

Contemplating the many ways to die. Always a favorite.

An apartment full of cats in Hoboken. Love it.

for the record i would much rather go to israel than hoboken (where ever the heck that is) although the house of cats doesn't sound to bad... besides for the litter i mean.

cassie :)

I like that the signs are in the three seperate languages. If the Israeli's really don't like the arabs that much, why would they put the warning signs in arabic?

This still does not beat out the signs in the Grand Canyon warning of heat stroke. Those are in about 8 languages, alond with a very graphic picture of the Sun whooping some hiker's ass (for those that can't read)

holy crap, youre so right. we all have our little "things", no matter where we go. i remember doing the tour of boston several years ago with an ex boyfriend and his family. the dad was obsessed with pointing out different marriot hotels. i was obsessed with how many dunkin donuts' i could see (for the record, they were more plentiful than KFC is in kentucky).

I love signs from other countries. It sounds like you had a blast.

Did you have enough Tampons with you for all the cats you encountered?

(Am I the only one who ever makes this reference?)

Love those signs. A person can never be too careful. lol And yep, I'm always on the lookout for cats, too. I have taken pictures of cats on just about every trip I've ever taken. :-)

I like the cliff sign the stick figure falling down the cliff is too good. All you need is a speech bubble that says "AIEEEEEEEEE!!!!!"

Love the - look a cat! - comments!!

The first time we took our son to the Bronx Zoo, we were so excited, thought he'd love it. The only things he was interested in were the ducks and the squirrels. We could have sat in out back yard for that!

Thanks Lily!

Alf - isn't it though? Such a variety...

I'm sure Grandpa will take your opinions into account sweat pea!

Lotus - Grand canyon sign sounds great! And yeah, you're right. There must not be any problem with your average, park visiting Arab. :-)

Disa - One time, before I ever went to Kentucky, I hung out with this girl who went on and on about how there weren't even any KFCs in Kentucky bec. they were mad at the Colonel for selling out...or something like that. She was totally joking of course...

Krissynae - We did thanks!

Delmer - Yes, you are. But for that I am so very thankful, because I continue to get searches for things like, "lost tampon brother help". Huh?!?!?!

Janet - I'm going to say that doesn't surprise me in the least! :-) :-) :-)

Thanks Roger!

SJ - I'm sure they were going to, but once they had him say "Aaaaiiiiieeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!" in Hebrew, Arabic, & English, it probably just got too big for the sign...

Kerry - He can come on vacation with us when my dad gets the apartment in Hoboken. I'm sure there will be squirrels in the parking lot! :-) :-) :-)

Regarding disa's comment: There aren't any Dunkin' donuts where I live but I'd always heard of them and when I went to Boston I was similarly amazed at the sheer number of Dunkin' Donut shops! In one area there seemed to be one every other block! As we drove around the area and out towards New Hampshire, I figured that if a town didn't have a Dunkin' Donuts then it was a podunk area.

Signs are hilarious and you wonder at some of them but then you see people doing stuff that defies common sense but then..you get different types of common sense depending on where you live. I don't live near landmines but places where they are a known danger might find signs warning of them redundant.

There's nothing more interesting than travelling with children. I just came back from a 2 week vacation with the family and there were gorgeous beaches and the most fun they had was swimming in the heated pool at the cottages...go figure!

At least there's signs warning you. According to my sister, in Egypt, there's no safety measures - survival of the fittest.

As for the elevator incident, eeek. The poor woman was trapped in the elevator with his HEAD.

Ms.Q - Yeah, the land mine one made perfect sense. Actually, the only ones I DIDN'T enjoy were just the general danger signs that never stated the particular danger. I wish I had gotten pictures of those, along with the ones that showed danger of rocks falling on someone's head.

Noelia - I was lucky that way this time I guess. The kids definitely preferred the beach, even with my daughter's recent jellyfish experience.

Curly GG - Yeah I guess a bunch of warnings is better than none, especially if you don't know the area or the language.

As for the elevator story, it's just one of those that is SO horrible I kind of *have* to joke about it. That's why I occasionally tell the kids "Don't get decapitated!!!!!" as we board an elevator.

I'm curious about how so MANY people manage to die on escalators & elevators. I get that there could be a freak accident now & again, but the injury rate just seems high.

Come to Israel and get your gentile head lopped off by our sheer majesty! Loved the pics, lady.
